After some discussion here.....
What would you say is the theme of this story? (Check out my last post to see a link on defining theme)
and why?

I think the theme of the story is that popularity is not that important. Having good friends is all that is important. I find that a popular person would only be friends with you to be more popular or get closer to someone you know. As her mother said: "Someday somebody will love you for your brains and because you are nice. Remember, there's a lid for every pot. Just wait until you grow up; you'll find people just like you-concerned with the important things in life.

I feel shes trying to rush into things too fast she thinks she NEEDS boy in particular the popular one and thats never the case i think depending the perspective your coming from their can also be a moral to the story.""you dont need a boy to complete u"" stand on your own 2 feet befcause by K.C sending that note he felt he had power over her, thats she was powerless and she just had to stand up.

I agree with alysha and maya and I also think that the theme could be that it doesn't matter how popular you are as long as you have friends.

The theme could be either: popularity or something like that. or maybe about something like how your peers see things, because of how, she says she is ugly and everyone else agrees.

I agree with Alysha. I think the theme is either popularity or bullying. K.C was a bully, and what he did had an affect on Cheryl and her friend. Popularity is most likely part of the reason he acted the way he did. The two sort of go hand in hand.

Maybe there isn't really a theme... it's more a moral to the story.

I agree with Aliya i didn't really notice a theme but what Cheryl's mom said was probably the moral of the story

Maybe there isn't really a theme... it's more a moral to the story. I disagree! i think that the moral is part of the theme, because at the end of the story you can draw the moral from the theme.

personally I think that the theme of the story is that beauty is sometimes only skin deep, like K.C. may have been attractive but he had a personality mean and horrible personality, and Cheryl may have not been the prettiest girl in the school, but she had a unique and beautiful personality!

Perhaps the theme was showing what reality is like because school isn't like the way it is on t.v. It.s not like everyone loves each other and we all friends.I know that's negative, but maybe that's what it could be portraying...

So, some folks in the other thread were saying that the story itself wasn't very interesting. I've been trying not to direct the conversation, but obviously (because I chose the story), I disagree.
Think about (go back and reread) what Cheryl said at the end, about how there will ALWAYS be Kenny Campbells in the world. Is that true? Are the KCs of the world just in middle school, or do adults battle with popularity, judgment and cruelty based on outward appearances as well?

I think there won't be exactly people like that who want to be popular and stuff because when your an adult you have your own group of friends and your not compared to other people. You also start to realise looks aren't everything, saying that there will still be that jerk out there who will screw you over but they aren't worth your time so you should just forget them and be friends with people who are genuinely nice and caring, etc...

I completely agree. This would be my other idea of the theme for the story.
